Speak with a knowledgeable consultant and they'll entertain you with many horror stories of salespeople ripping-off unsuspecting students. Ensure you only ever work with a skilled advisor that digs deep to find out what's appropriate to you - not for their pay-packet! Dig until you find a starting-point that will suit you. Don't forget, if you've had any relevant accreditation or direct-experience, then it's not unreasonable to expect to pick-up at a different starting-point to a trainee with no history to speak of. If this is going to be your first attempt at studying for an IT examination then you should consider whether to start out with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first.

A big contender for the top potential problem across all IT training is a requirement to attend multiple workshop days. Many certification companies harp on about the 'benefits' of going in to their classes, however, they quickly become a thorn in your side due to many reasons:

- Multiple centre visits - often hundreds of miles each and every time.

- Monday to Friday access with workshops can be usual, and trying to take several days leave in a single chunk is usually problematic for most working students.

- At just 4 weeks holiday each year, using half of that on educational workshops leaves very little time for holidays.

- 'In-Centre' workshop days often get fully subscribed quite quickly, leaving us with the '2nd best' solution.

- The pace of the workshop - centre-days often consist of trainees of varied skill, so tension can run high between students that want a quicker pace to those who prefer a more relaxed pace.

- Calculate the increasing cost of all the travelling, accommodation, food and parking and you could find yourself astounded. Students have reported extra costs of between several hundred and a couple of thousand pounds. Work it out - and you'll see how.

- Privacy is important to us all. We shouldn't risk throwing away any potential advancement at our current place of work because of our studies.

- It's quite usual for trainees to keep a question to themselves - just down to the fact that they're amongst other classmates.

- For those of us who need to at times live or work away from home, imagine the increased difficulty in making the necessary events, as time is now more scarce than ever.

To find a more flexible route, make use of pre-filmed classes in the comfort of your own chosen environment - and do it when it's convenient to you - not someone else. You can study from home on your PC or if you've got a laptop, you can go anywhere. If you have any questions, then logon to the 24x7 support facility (that should've been packaged with any technical type of training.) It doesn't matter how frequently you want to re-do a section, filmed instructors can never get frustrated with you! Also, as an added bonus, note-taking is gone forever. Everything is already there for quick access. Put directly: You save money, avoid hassle, don't waste time and avoid polluting the environment.

With Databases playing such a big part in modern society, exactly what type of work exists that pertains to them? When we take the work of IT professionals, there are two major Database sectors - The 1st calls for the development and building of the actual software that 'databases' are powered by, & the second involves the management and administration work needed to implement the data filed on them. The Administrator (management) position is much more popular - in industry a Database Administrator is more frequently referred to as a 'DBA'. A DBA may typically be employed by a medium sized or bigger company, & look after the daily operations of a specific database. 'DBA's' manage the Security of the company's Databases, make sure that everything's backed-up thoroughly, & use the data to make meaningful reports for management. They will also have an understanding of the Database 'language' of 'SQL' (Structured Query Language) - pronounced as 'see-quel' - which provides a 'standardised' method of interrogating a Database for the data needed.

It's a good idea if you are just getting into IT to begin your career track with a training program software-support. This will provide you with some lower level accreditations, to help you get your first foot on the ladder, as well as provide you with an understanding of a further worthwhile aspect of the business. An excellent training course for the newcomer is the MCDST ('Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician'). If you then accompany this qualification with the 'MCTS' & the MCITP, you will have done a complete career track which should as a rule take roughly five-hundred hrs to do. Don't feel under pressure to make the right decisions on the best career track by yourself though. You need to be sure that the teaching methods & the selected profession will be right for you, so talk things through with a professional I.T. training advisor first. If you don't really focus closely on exactly where you wish to end up, you might find that you're way off track & many hundreds of pounds worse off!

Considering how a program is 'delivered' to you isn't always given the appropriate level of importance. In what way are your training elements sectioned? And in what order and how fast does each element come? Most companies will sell you a program typically taking 1-3 years, and send out each piece as you finish each section. This sounds reasonable until you consider the following: What would happen if you didn't finish each element at the proposed pace? And maybe you'll find their order of completion doesn't come as naturally as an alternative path could be.

To avoid any potential future issues, it's normal for most trainees to request that all their modules (now paid for) are sent immediately, and not in a piecemeal fashion. It's then up to you in what order and how fast or slow you want to go.
